Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland

Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU) is one of Poland’s leading academic institutions and recently celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019.

As a co-host of the UNESCO-UNITWIN Network on Culture in Emergencies, AMU plays a pivotal role in the protection of cultural heritage. Experts from its Faculty of Law and Administration actively contribute to the prevention of illicit trafficking of cultural property and prosecution of heritage crimes.

In 2016, the University established the Scientific and Research Team on Art Market and Cultural Heritage Legal Protection, focusing on legal issues in the art market. AMU collaborates with institutions such as the UNESCO Chair on Cultural Property Law in Opole and TIAMSA. Its efforts enrich the UNITWIN Network, promoting cultural heritage protection and addressing challenges related to culture in emergencies.

Meet our team

Alicja Jagielska-Burduk is co-coordinator of the UNESCO-UNITWIN Network on Culture in Emergencies at the Adam Mickiewicz University.

Alicja Jagielska-Burduk, PhD, LLD, MBA, attorney at law, UNESCO Chair on Cultural Property Law at the University of Opole. She is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the international journal Santander Art and Culture Law Review.  She was a visiting scholar at the Law School, University of Technology Sydney in Australia, Institute of European Studies, University of California, Berkeley in the United States and received a UNIDROIT fellowship funded by the UNIDROIT Governing Council Members. 

In 2014, she was nominated as Poland‘s representative to UNESCO on the list of mediators and members of conciliation commissions for the settlement of disputes concerning the return of cultural property in the event of illegal trade. In 2020, she was selected as an arbitrator for the initial Arbitrator Pool of the Court of Arbitration for Art (CafA) in Hague. She is a member of the Polish National Commission for UNESCO.  She also serves as a member of the board of the International Art Market Studies Association, which gathers together art world professionals and scholars, and co-chairs TIAMSA Legal.

Since 2020, she has been a member of the Council of the Regional Council of Attorneys at law in Bydgoszcz  (she  serves as a dean of the Council since 2024) and the National Council of Attorneys at law. In 2022 her nomination as correspondent of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) for Poland for three years (from June 2022 to May 2025) was approved. She has widely published on private law, cultural heritage and art law. In 2022 she shas published a mongraph  Cultural Heritage as a Legal Hybrid. Between Public and Private Law (Springer, Cham 2022).

Wojciech Szafrański, Professor at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (AMU), PhD, MBA, art expert, expert in legal issues related to culture and the art market, serves as an appraiser of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. He leads the Scientific and Research Team on Dealing in Works of Art and Legal Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the AMU, he is also a member of the UNESCO Chair on Cultural Property Law team at the University in Opole, and TIAMSA Legal committee member. He serves as a deputy-editor  of the international journal Santander Art and Culture Law Review. He  is a member of the Polish National Commission for UNESCO. Member of the Commission on Acquisitions: Wawel Royal Castle, National Museum in Krakow, Arsenal City Gallery in Poznań and the Programme Board of the Sleńdziński Gallery in Białystok. He has published over 15 books and 70 chapters.
